NEXT MEETING: Wednesday, March 19, 2025, 6:00 PM VIA ZOOM: the next GCAS general meeting features GCAS member (and past president!) Kyle Meredith, who will present an informal slideshow of his & Josh’s recent travels in Mexico titled, Prehispanic Mexico—Someplace Else. Kyle describes, "Did you want to see another presentation about the Maya or Aztecs? This isn't it. Are you interested in the Flower World of Mesoamerica and how it relates to the SW/NW? Sorry. This is an in-depth examination of the genetics of Paquime—not! What you are going to see is a tourist-eye view of a couple of sites and cultures you might not have heard of. If I were an academic with credentials, you could expect to learn something more than you already know, but that's not me. Lower your expectations and sit back and enjoy a slideshow of some pretty cool architecture and artifacts. You can even butt in with your two-cents worth from time to time as long as we don't belabor any points. Who am I? My name's Kyle. That's all you need to know." NEXT FIELD TRIP: Sunday, March 2, 2025: The next GCAS field trip will visit the Woodrow Site, one of the largest and best-protected sites in the area, led by its site steward, the GCAS's own Greg Conlin. Meet at 10:00 AM sharp at the Chuck's Folly gas station on the west side of Hwy 180 in Cliff, about a 35-minute drive westbound on Hwy 180 from Silver City and a short distance before the junction of Hwy 180 and Hwy 211. Wear sturdy shoes and weed proof clothes, and pack sun protection, water, and a sack lunch if desired. Before you go, read this Archaeology Southwest article to learn more about the significance of this site. As always, to protect sensitive sites like this one we limit this field trip to GCAS members and those guests who can accompany the GCAS member in their vehicle. Let's go!

The Gila Wilderness holds a special place in the hearts of us out here in the territories. It was the world's first designated wilderness and it's right here in our own back yard. Save a very special date: Saturday, June 1, 2024, 12:00PM noon-4:00PM, to visit Gough Park in Silver City: join the fun as the GCAS shifts our usual "first Sunday of the month" field trip one day earlier to the first Saturday of June to celebrate the main event of the 2024 centennial of the Gila Wilderness. The US Forest Service Wilderness Ranger District is our host, commemorating the vital partnerships throughout the community that have contributed to the preservation of the Gila Wilderness over the past century. The GCAS is one among many such community organizations that will have a booth in Gough Park to showcase how we local people working together have preserved the Gila Wilderness for us all to love and enjoy.

In Memoriam: J.J. Brody

Jj-brodyThe GCAS is saddened to report that anthropologist, professor, and author J.J. Brody, PhD, passed away at age 95 on May 5, 2024.

Among Dr. Brody's many accomplishments in the fields of anthropology, archaeology, and ethnography, he was curator of Albuquerque's Maxwell Museum for 23 years. He wrote a number of books our GCAS members may be familiar with, including Mimbres Pottery: Ancient Art of the American Southwest (1983), and Mimbres Painted Pottery (rev. 2005). The University of New Mexico, his professional home, has more on his life and contributions to science, here.

The University of New Mexico is planning a memorial service for Dr. Brody on Friday, May 17, 2024, from 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM, at a campus location to be determined. Remembrances and condolences to his family can be left on Legacy's page for Dr. Brody.

Next GCAS Meeting Welcomes Aaron Wright as Featured Speaker

Head shotWednesday, May 15, 2024, 6:00PM: the GCAS monthly meeting shifts to the Roundup Lodge in San Lorenzo (Mimbres Valley) for the summer months. Doors open at 6PM for a potluck dinner so bring your own plates, utensils, and a dish for yourself or to share with the group. Brief GCAS business meeting begins at 6:30 PM followed immediately by our evening's Featured Speaker, Preservation Anthropologist Aaron Wright PhD, who will present Indigenous Rock Imagery of the Sonoran Desert.
