NEXT MEETING: Wednesday, July 17, 2024, 6:00PM: members and non-members are welcome to the GCAS monthly meeting at the Roundup Lodge in San Lorenzo (Mimbres Valley). We start at 6PM with a potluck - bring your own plates & utensils, and a dish for yourself or to share with with what we expect to be a larger than usual number of guests, including the starving students of the Preservation Archaeology Museum Curation and Survey Field School. Let's feed these folks well, people! At about 6:30PM we will have a brief business meeting followed immediately by our featured speaker, Archaeology Southwest's Karen Schollmeyer PhD, who will share updates on her and her field school team's work at the WNMU Museum which includes curating the artifacts comprising the NAN Ranch collection. Come meet the next generation of archaeologists and learn about the latest activity at our own WNMU Museum. In order to offer our members a safe and comfortable experience at our in-person meetings the GCAS follows CDC and New Mexico Department of Health guidelines for indoor gatherings including masking, distancing, and vaccinations. We recommend each attendee take the precautions they feel are appropriate for themselves.

NEXT FIELD TRIP: we defer a July field trip due to conflict with the July 4 holiday weekend. Watch this space for our next field trip scheduled for Sunday, August 4, 2024, destination TBA.

Jornada Research Institute - Projects and Trips

Generic flight-2.0Archaeologist Dave Greenwald of the Jornada Research Institute checks in with the latest action in the Jornada-Mogollon region. He reports that:

weekend excavations at Cornelius Locus are suspended until next Spring. In November, the JRI will organize excavations at Creekside Village, scheduling TBA. Expect some lab days when the JRI volunteers (like you!) will process (wash, sort re-bag) artifacts from Cornelius Locus and select samples for radiocarbon dating. Dave will provide specifics on these activities (where and when) in a future email to participants as well as to this here website.

Dave also sends updates on JRI's upcoming international tours*:

"Mayan World tour still has space available but on November 5th, we will close registration for this tour because we will not be able to guarantee hotel rooms after that date. If you have been considering joining this tour, please contact Dave soon. Tour dates are February 5 to 15, 2024...." Scroll down on this page for details.

"Northern Scotland: Highlands, Isle of Lewis, and Orkney, scheduled for July 29 to August 9, 2024 is fully booked. We have a wait list started and have arranged a second tour if we get a minimum of 16 to sign up. The dates for the second tour will be August 12 through 22, 2024 (depart USA on August 11 with overnight flight into Inverness arriving on August 12). Please contact Dave if you are interested in joining this tour...."

Greek Odyssey (Greece and Ephesus, Turkey): we are accepting deposits for this tour which is scheduled for October 7 to 18, 2024. This tour is a land and cruise tour (6 days of land and 4 days on a cruise ship to visit multiple islands: Mykonos, Patmos, Rhodes, Crete, and Santorini). If you are interested in this tour, please contact Dave. Details are on this page."

*The Jornada Research Institute has instituted a policy that allows the JRI to donate $125 to any non-profit organization that any traveler on their tours designates. The GCAS is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation/public charity, so please keep our name in mind as a recipient when you sign up for a JRI tour. And let us know how you enjoy your JRI trip!
