Register Now for Next Week's Special Presentation by Danni Romero
01/06/2023
Wednesday January 11, 2023, 4:00PM MST in-person in Silver City, New Mexico; and online via Zoom: sponsored by Silver City's Southwest Word Fiesta, it's a FREE presentation by WNMU's Director of the Fleming Museum, archaeologist Danni Romero, who will discuss the Hidden Word of the Mimbres: Glimpses of Daily Life through Pottery.
In a combination in-person and online program moderated by Stephen Fox, Director Romero will explain that archaeological evidence of the Mimbres culture dates to approximately 200 CE and continues through the apex of the Mimbres Classic period (about 1000-1130 CE) before the region was essentially depopulated. The Mimbres people left no written record but archaeologists have spent over a century studying the abundant cultural material they left behind - especially the intricate images on their black-on-white ceramics - to gain insights into how they lived. Director Romero will show complete vessels as well as pottery sherds and other materials as she focuses on the people who made them and who shared this land long ago. She will explain how archaeologists use clues from the painted images of daily life and the artifacts that support those images to ascertain the Mimbreños' social networks and understand the significance of children in the archaeological record.
In-person seating will be limited so please reserve a seat ASAP by contacting the Southwest Word Fiesta.
