Pats on the Back All Around

On June 8, 2022, the Silver City Watershed Keepers organized a field trip to the Mimbres Culture Heritage Site for local youth as part of their Nature Discovery Summer Camp program. GCAS members led a tour of the Mattocks site and offered the group hands-on experiences in archaeological techniques. The students visited the nearby Nature Conservancy’s Mimbres River Preserve where they learned about native fish and macroinvertebrates from USFS ranger Emily Pollam. Silver Consolidated Schools provided lunches and the Silver City Co-Op supplied fresh apples for all.
These diverse organizations came together to create a full day of education and fun for local students. This is the kind of community action the GCAS envisioned for our part of the Mimbres Archaeological Research and Education Center (MAREC), now headquartered in the historic Wood House at the Mimbres Culture Heritage Site. Construction is still underway at the Wood House but we are thrilled that our MAREC project is already attracting the community's attention in such a positive way.
Thank you for involving the GCAS in your program, Silver City Watershed Keepers. Webmaster says, check out their programs and priority issues on their website and enjoy their Facebook page for more summer camp updates!
