NEXT MEETING: Wednesday, December 20, 2023, at 6:00PM: it's the GCAS annual holiday get-together at 2045 Memory Lane in Silver City! Our holiday custom is to have a potluck with a virtually nonexistent business meeting and no official program, followed by a white-elephant gift exchange and general holiday good times. Dress festively and bring your best holiday dish to share! (In order to offer our members a safe and comfortable experience the GCAS follows CDC and New Mexico Department of Health guidelines for indoor gatherings including masking, distancing, and vaccinations. We recommend all attendees follow the same.

NEXT FIELD TRIP: Sunday, December 3, 2023: our next field trip - GCAS members only - investigates the C-Bar Ranch area off of Highway 90. Meet at the car park just off of Hwy 90 in Tyrone in front of the US Post Office BEFORE 10:00 AM (this jumping-off spot is about 15-20 minutes’ drive from downtown Silver City but be mindful of possible delays due to Hwy 90 construction in downtown Silver City). The group will LEAVE FROM the Tyrone parking area at 10:00 AM sharp. Destinations: a shelter cave and beyond to a pictograph location. Leader Kyle Meredith explains that: “most vehicles should be able to drive to the site, although C-Bar Road is rough in spots. We encourage carpooling from the parking area in Tyrone to the site! From where our group will park on C-Bar Road it is a short walk to the shelter cave where we will see bedrock mortars and smoky ceilings. The hike to the pictographs is about one mile over some rough terrain and some easy trails. To see the pictographs it is necessary to do a little scrambling over rocks and boulders. Perhaps it’s not the season for rattlesnakes, but be aware that I have seen one on two different occasions.”

BREAKING: Danielle Romero Tapped as New Director of WNMU Museum

Dir photo DRomeroHere is some news we've all been waiting for! We are thrilled to report that Danielle Romero - our longtime friend, Mimbres scholar, and the GCAS's 2020 Coinman Grant Award recipient - is the new Director of the WNMU Museum in Silver City, New Mexico.

The WNMU Museum is home to the NAN Ranch Collection: the largest and most complete collection of Mimbres materials in existence from a single prehistoric Mimbres site, and the largest and most comprehensive permanent interpretative exhibition of Mimbres pottery and artifacts in the world. Not only will Danielle bring her knowledge and enthusiasm to these and the museum's other collections, she hopes to work closely with the GCAS - providing all us avocational archaeologists remarkable learning and volunteering opportunities!

Following are the University's announcement to their staff/faculty, and a few words from Danni herself:

Please welcome Danielle Romero to WNMU as the new Director of our museum. Born and raised in Southern California, Danielle has spent the last 11 years in Nevada managing archaeological collections and working for the State Historic Preservation Office. A PhD candidate at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, focusing on Mimbres pottery and how it informs prehistoric interaction, she has spent most of her summers for the past 9 years in the Mimbres Valley/Silver City working on various field projects. We are extremely fortunate to have someone of Danni's education, experience, expertise, and interests that align so strategically with the focus and future of the Museum. She says, "I am excited to be a part of the WNMU community and looking forward to continuing the success of the WNMU Museum."

Danni, on behalf of faculty, staff, and administration, I can say we are happy you have joined us. Please stop by the Museum to visit Danni, or send a warm welcome and best wishes.

And Danni says:

Hello GCAS! I am so excited to step into this role and be in Silver City full-time. I'm ready to talk Mimbres and ceramics 24/7/365 instead of that little 6-week field window every summer. Can't wait to see everyone! Stop by anytime!

Congratulations and welcome home, Danni. We will see you soon!
